You belong to me

Tomorrow you will fly half way around the world, and with layovers, it will take you
just over 48 hours take you
9000 miles away from home to
Egypt
a word
you’ve heard over and over over the years
a place you’ve seen on the golden screen
as far back as you can recall
those dim images shivering and swirling
windblown sand glowing under a blazing sun
Tutankhamun’s treasure
Ben Ezra synogogue abandoned
El Alamein war shrine to another generation of young men sacrificed to war
catacombs of Kom El Shuqqafa near the quiet just beyond quiet that only the dead hear
thousands of mosques
Coptic churches
many temples
many shrines
many
so many . . .
so many cats
one in particular
peculiar it seeks you out
in the night
calling in the night
a low cry
a low cry coming down
down to you since the days of the Pharoahs . . .
But that’s tomorrow . . .
You’ll see this all when your journey begins . . .

I wake up burning fever that’s baking me in bed
so hot I’m freezing and can’t breathe and
it’s my cat Marie mewing
sitting on my chest
she licks my chin
protecting Sphinx
I wipe perspiration from my neck and forehead . . .

Oh yes that journey just now
about tomorrow a dream of the past
that’s already happened

pet her
and breathe and cough
see the pyramids along the Nile
and don’t forget
