I can’t tell you which of us thought about it first.
Maybe we vibed simultaneously.
Reciprocal falling in love. Our brainwaves at
The same moment meshing, evolutionary
Leap to stage two, devolutionary
Step one.
We all remember that first kiss, don’t we?
A first kiss on the way to the last kiss, I don’t
Recall at all. Nor do I remember
Any of the first kisses with anyone after.
Why is that? Is it because our first true love is
The only true love of our lives? It’s hard
To figure out, seeing as I’ve deeply loved more
Women since.
That first, first kiss. It’s a novelty,
At least. No. It’s monumental for us.
Standing sharply in memory when all our loves
Have faded into murky dreams that mist our heart’s
History.
These aged days, I no longer
Fall in love with every captivating face, show
Of leg, witty remark, infectious laugh, brilliant
Turn of phrase, or gentle touch of soft hand.
Maybe I don’t remember how to do it – I
Mean my heart, not my head. How odd it seems that hearts
Forget.
But back to that first kiss, it was
On Kahala Avenue, after we’d outrun
Traffic across the street. Under the amber light
You looked up at me, and our minds melded
At the top of a downward slide into ancient
History.
How it haunts me unlike anyone
I believe I’ve loved as deeply since.
A flashing light fixed back across my heart’s dark bay.
