Here’s my draft for Monday 04.22.19
Hawaiʻi Sonnet 49
Thinking over my years of ocean waves and water
floating on my back here at Queen’s Surf
my eyes closed against the sinking sun
bobbing on ripples, nearly falling asleep
I can smell the salt scent of fresh picked limu kohu
recall jumping off the rocks at Ala Moana
pipo boarding and falling on my ass at Waikīkī
diving into deep waters outside Hanauma Bay
kayaking the Mokulua Islands
squiding all night to a boat engine purr off Waimea
throwing nets into the boiling surf near Barking Sands
fishing Nimitz on Sundays with my father
And I recall too, my mother strumming her ʻukulele
singing to us “Beyond the Reef,” “Red Sails in the Sunset”
