out like a light

the bulb flickers dark to light to dark to light
like a strobing spotlight making everything go slow-motion

it’s twelve feet to the ceiling and I’m acrophobic
remember the time I climbed the monkeypod in first grade
froze and couldn’t come down, so they called
the custodian to bring his ladder and come up
to help me down, everyone watching from the ground

my balance is shakier every day, even though I practice
standing on one foot while I wait for my food
to heat up in the microwave

I think maybe it would be much wiser to flip the switch
sit eating in the dark, rather than be tragically found on the floor
at the foot of the ladder, a dramatically shattered bulb stem
grasped foolishly in my cold old lifeless lightless fingers

Aloha #WriterFriday, I hope all is well. Today’s #WritingPrompt is actually a two-choicer

light
dark

Use either or both to inspire a piece of writing, and then post that piece on your site and link back to me, or simply post it as a comment below. I would lover to read it : )
