Miss Gomes fidgeted with a pen on her desk. Chan waited.
Her hands came to rest. She turned her palms toward her and looked at them. “No. We went as buyers.”
Wow. These must be quite the committed couple.
“Buyers,” said Chan, “so you two have plans.”
She looked up at him, her face changed. “I need to talk to a lawyer, Lieutenant. I don’t want to say anything more.”
Chan smiled at her, amused by this turn. “Being in love isn’t a crime, Miss Gomes.”
Her nervousness ran past agitation to anger.
“Please leave, Lieutenant. I need to speak to my attorney.”
Chan met up with Yamamoto in the lobby.
“David, I didn’t get any specifics outta Galiza and Waters, but they are definitely nervous about something.”
“Yeah, Vic, Lisa Gomes is actually lawyering up. She and Enfield seem to have been an item. They went open house shopping two weeks ago.”
“Open house shopping,” Yamamoto said. “Realtors don’t go open house shopping, uh? That don’t make sense.”
“How so?”
“Realtors, well, even though you know plenny of them would like to stab each other in the back, they usually show courtesy to each other, huh? If one realtor like look at a house, he’d just ask the realtor who’s listing it. They don’t have to mingle with the other riffraff buyers like us, David.”
Chan said, “The pervasive nervousness of these guys stinks. It’s beginning to feel like the whole place reeks. Wha’do we know about this company?”
