I’m swirling in the drouse of that head on the pillow before sleep,
a thousand ideas swizzling around my brain that take me down,
roulette weather bloomed clouds looming, the faraway thunder heard
before the fear of lightning actually striking you. Stop. This one.
He said, Howdy, neighbor, how you doing? Friendly. I thought,
trust him. Maybe one day we’ll share secrets. Time’s a bond.
But no, it’s hard to make real friends, get to deeper things with them.
I say one day, I’m sagging under the pressure of —
But he’d walked away, no interest in my problems like
I have in his. Strange the dreams that come up, bad enough,
but then to remember them the next morning
staring out the window, picture of my John Deere lawnmower
sitting in his garage, goddamn random sleep disturbance
that will stay on the wheel until one of us moves on.
