I love, at first, that you commented on everything indiscriminately,
pointed at this or that, attached sounds to whatever ideas
ran around in your head, and all the while
I tried my best to read you, struggled to interpret what you said,
from first sounds you murmured, up to the point where you began
to make sense.
During that period where your words
didn’t seem to match up with my ideas of your ideas yet,
you speaking and thinking the way I speak and think,
I did marvel at your speech, it’s true,
nodded assumed agreement, all my praise and delight,
although I still never did understand very much, I’m guessing
of what you said to me.
And then one amazing day in our growing relationship,
when all of a sudden you began
to chain words together in patterns I could truly recognize,
made absolute sense, said things so easy to understand,
perfectly transparent thought, simple speech, straightforward and clear,
on that day or wonder, I suddenly realized
you had given up your original poetry,
lost touch with it as a favor to me and to all of us.
