Collegial (HS 133)

The stage is empty, uncrowded, the clipped smiles were
briefer than the blink of a glassy-eyed battle fatigue
that runs deeper than the breath you will take
when the moment arrives, no more talk, no more nods,
no more deep-seated simmering disgust, when the passionate eyes
close, you standing alone, amid strangers, a throng of others,
with no more arguing, no more objections, no more ideas,
your index finger licks, tentative, that littleness, that cold button
that can sound the loudest starting horn in the universe,
now you have made the call, all lines are hung up,
now silence, breathe, mentally tap out an unspeakable morse code
of no more worry, no more despair, it’s all fallen down
on just you now, your pointer finger, your tap, inhale, tap, exhale,
and then you press down hard and light up the world.
