Hawai‘i Sonnet 113 (To Walk)

I’m trying to get back into regular walking shape,
my back much better after injections and physical therapy.
The other day as I walked, I was so deep in thought
that when I looked up and ahead, focusing on
where I was going, I knew I was moving east
because I could see the sun rising
from that direction.  But then, wait,
was I?  Shaking my head and looking around,
I had that creeping up on me strange realization
that I was actually traveling west, toward the sun
going down, and I was walking now into a valley of
mountain shadows that would soon be shading me.
I’d lost track of the time, and all the hours
had passed so quickly into the late afternoon.
