Hawai‘i Sonnet 99 (A Calling)

Someone far away, speaks something
to me from the eagle-taloned lectern clutching,
a bird of prey perched upon the ball of earth,
ministering to me down here, looking down
at my hands, clasped and twirling thumbs,
I hear a little of the lesson for today and all
that matters to us in this church
this morning, in this world, about
how to be
and how to become.

When I look up now
my father and my mother smile at me
and speak the sun and wind in my ears,
my eyes turned skyward to them see
all the stars and moondust that are soon to be.
