Hawaiʻi Sonnet 92 (So I See)

Ah, that holy moment of retrospective understanding,
the aha second when everything that didn’t come together
but could have didn’t
until now, gray-haired,

oh so clear over many beers, a startling vision
of hand to hand, palms matched upon the frosted glass,
finger to finger,
my lifeline so much shorter —

you knew, I know,
relationships can be carved
at birth, so forward looking, life beginning,
but not conscious yet of coming to
the crystal backward glance
at nothing.
