This new year begins with dreams
Shopping and love and judging a speech tournament
With friends who live on the East Coast
One of whom passed away last year
A jumbled array from G to yes X
Surprises me constantly
Even in my sleep
These bizarre plot twists cause me
To comment how strange the range
And the last one will wake me up
A young woman asking the time
As I stand in the Costco checkout line
Then shows me her watch
An expensive one I can’t afford
So she knows what time it is
And still she’s asking me again
I tell her I can’t read the dial
But why is she asking me the time
Since she knows it and I don’t
To which an old woman replies
It’s time to wake up
And make a resolution
To get out of this line
Leave everything in the cart behind
Live every day of the year
