A Dream Within a Dream

I listened to my boss’s pep talk.

Let me make this clear as crystal to all of you.
You’ve heard, I know, that honesty’s policy is always best.
I’m here, in this lovely garden spot, to reinforce that message.

But, I thought, to lie like a pro’s a nice close second.

We’re second from the top now, she said, reading my thoughts.
So you know which policy best serves our chances to seize the top spot.

I awoke to the sound of knocking, realized I was dreaming,
stepped out on the balcony to see who was making all the ruckus.
Someone below was laughing, joking and yet not at the same time.

He said, Why would I tip a porter who’d ushered me into Hades?

I awoke to the sound of knocking, realized I’d been dreaming,
stepped out onto the balcony to see who was making all the ruckus.
My wife joined me, pinned my hand painfully to the iron railing.

The time has come, she said, to lie like hell.
