It’s possible I may live longer than my parents did.
Desperation for more time should affect me with less intensity
maybe, given this additional time I might expect.
If I get right down to it, however, even if I should live longer,
each additional day I’m alive is one more I must be thankful for,
no matter how long I may live in the end.
Each day I wake up now days
I thank my good fortune just because. Even if somehow science
were able to tell me on precisely what date
and at exactly what time I would die,
I’d still be thankful for each new morning.
There is so much good that can be, needs to be, done.
Even old folks like me can try to make the world better,
should do our part to positively affect eternity in the time we have left.
