Chan’s anger rose again. Who was Yamamoto to question him?
“David,” said Yamamoto, “what’s her alibi for yesterday?”
Chan’s anger shifted gears and turned right into embarrassment. Closing his eyes, he pictured his career going down the toilet.
“David?”
Opening his eyes, Chan gave him a look Yamamoto could easily read. “What’s her number?”
“ Vic, let me call her.”
“Not to say I told you so, David, but from now on I’ll talk to her.”
Chan gave him the restaurant and home numbers. Nina was at work. Inwardly cursing his carelessness, Chan barely heard Yamamoto’s side of the conversation.
