With Mercy (HS 137)

The wind moaned all through the night, groaned so,
making love for hours to the trees surrounding me,
the two swaying together long past the point of fatigue,
the rain blessing their union, torrential, tender
all the while, the rocking, the pounding, kept waking me,
to flickering memories of amorous romping leaked
through paper thin walls of some complaint. I believe almost
I have been there, in my time, in that place, felt it all, I seem
to recall now, as I lie fitfully sleeping through long hours of restless rapture
into dawn, waking near morning, after an anguished night tossing
in a cold, cold bed, having dreamt the dream of long ago in pieces,
a wholly passed passion once near me, dear once to me, oh now
how I hear, aroused awfully aware in this narrowing twilight hour
that no birds sing.

Revised 08.30.23

The wind moans all night through, groans so
Love made for hours with surrounding trees
Swaying together far past the point of fatigue
Rain blessed, in torrid, tender union
The rocking, the pounding, keeping me awake
Flickering memories of old amorous stirrings
Noise enough through thin walls then with no complaint
I have been there, in my time, in that same space
Felt it all, I recall, lying fitfully drowsing now
Long hours of restlessness tonight in a cold bed
Fitful dreaming of long passed pieces
Past passions once near to me, dear to me
How aroused awfully in the narrowing twilight din

No dawn birds singing our bliss this morning after
