The learned philosopher wanted to say

that these are the ways
inspiration fires, ideas strike,
from where well up the wealth
of all ideas for creative writing.

It’s not so neat an explanation, I find,
the experience a bit different every time,
and there are so many more ways I’m sure,
for me to say each one
would be like numbering
the infinite.

To say I have the book now, it would be
one tremendous autobiography, the diary
of a madman last seen counting angels
on the head of a pin, polishing away his fingerprints
from the face of the earth, touching each grain of sand
at its core before he begins a second draft.

The learned philosopher said this was his goal,
and as I go I look back at him through the window,
watch his candle burning low, imagine how his quill
was worn down centuries now,
how the light finally sputtered,
and every page he had was turned to black.
