I know every star you will see tonight
All of them being born in times after me
Soaring only by my design for their young eternities
I’ve logged each birth over my long lifetime
Each coming up behind me in their maiden flights
Named by you for what they seem to be
Belts, bears, crabs, dogs, and outsized ladles
I knew them before in their times of anonymity
Arranged them artistically in their galactic infancy
Witnessed their blooming in numbers astronomically
They’re all my own blazing herd of fleet footed lights
Bright and unswerving on their appointed paths
Never looking for that fame they’d never have sought
My example of anonymity being their guided thought
