Long Before Litigiousness

When I was in preschool
A long, long time ago
Only a three-year-old, mind you
At snack time we’d eat
Icy yellow pineapple cubes
Sprinkled with green mint leaves
Out of white pleated paper cups
Not with spoons or — no way — our fingers
Which would be unsanitary or savage
No, we used wooden toothpicks
Not the flat ones with one blunt end
No, we used the ones shaped like needles
The both lethal ends
Perfect for piercing gums and tongues
Our mouths streaming blood
Splattering our childhood treat
Held in the little white cups
We used to catch the red gore
Of a good time ruined
And a memory to cherish
