Was It Only a Moment?

Losing pages dog-eared as my life like chapter times
Read my path like a book left fading on a pale bench
When days were long and hearts would never beat bare echoes
Word after word with our loudest laughs shook us hard
But solid to nothing days swathed white in noiseless longing hours
Our sharpest made memories reread now lose their edge
With corners worn how our yesterdays all became
The history that seems fallen deep in some dried out wishing well
A shelving of our losing work close cramped in mildew and must
Library cobwebs flutter dust over covers peeling clear away
To lay bare empty centers in a shortening story arc to
Too few moments coming down to my memory’s emptying days
That youth cut near to lightning quick in time back glances
To only seconds mist between the covers whisked away with you
