I have to be on a south side beach to experience the glory of a Hawai‘i sunset
An unobstructed view between me and the twilight extravaganza
Is the only way to completely immerse myself in the show
Perfect and marvelous in its slow musical motion
A different sound than I remember the rising expectation of a rosy dawn
Those gorgeous clouds, if they’re present, golden as well in their hour
Of sundown, bathing me with their own darkening splendor
The grandeur of the sun easing down around them toward the horizon line
And I wait for the green flash that sends those shimmering clouds to bed
The last glint rechristening day to nighttime quiet
Signaling it’s time to think about heading to my own bed
On my flight path fleeting at its own speed
Never knowing how close to me
My own slip beyond the sea may be
