On Seeing Hiroshige’s Sudden Rain

The seven on the bridge must deal with storm circumstances
Beings battered by a fearsome downpour
Caught in the sudden deluge, some better equipped
Luckier the one with the full-length coat covering him from head to buttocks
Than he with only a hat to shield him from the driving rain
Coming at them like bullets blasted from above
Or spears hurled Zeus-like at the obstinate earth dwellers
Some angered god delivering a divine lessoning
So more fortunate still the trio huddled together
Their umbrella spacious enough to span all three
Enormous hubris here to flaunt that so many
Can withstand the punishing weather with only one
Most fortunate of all, two school girls, dressed in identical uniforms
Each with her own umbrella, supplied by parents who know the score
The two headed for their parochial indoctrination
Which taken to heart will ensure immunity and enough umbrellas
To save them from whatever infuriates their sky masters
