This may not be the case if you live in Germany
But I find it difficult to recall the names
Of stars chosen to play the enemy in The Longest Day
I know two well-known actors from that time
Who play Nazi roles in very convincing ways
Gert Fröbe, infamous as Goldfinger in the James Bond film
And Curd Jürgens, another Bond antagonist, in The Spy Who Loved Me
Are tasked with assuming roles as two of Hitler’s own
Along with the others to whom Western viewers are less exposed
How difficult is it for them to be cast this way
The Longest Day made only 15 years beyond the war
Their sentiment toward Nazis a mix of anger and shame
I wonder how much a paycheck can ease the pain
Of being a German actor becoming a Nazi in this way

“His boots are on the wrong feet.” Great film!
