Off the Ground

Charles Dickens whispered, “On the ground”
Meaning and significance? Mr. Hart
Sits back and thinks in terms of legal precedence
The message in back of a bleak house, maybe
A blind alley behind there, rotten and stinking
with no way out, where adjudication through
Eternal argumentation means blinding stagnation
Where there will be no order ever, so clarification
Only is a healthy pound of melted butter, the end
Of a scrumptiously described sumptuous Dickens’ feast
A fantasm of crystalline candied orange peel
And confectioner’s sugar that might seem
Too sweet, to some, sickly so, but is the ideal order

Perhaps he referred to the fact
That we were left there, on the ground here
Behind him as he soared, quitting the chronicling
Of this dreary world for the ultimate dessert
Following, the crescendo of all courses
A perfect pudding shared with a heavenly host
This choir, the final and finest of his muses
