If you’ve ever said that X is/was refreshing
And you meant it seriously
I wasn’t there to hear it
And don’t actually know what it means —
I’m not talking about reloading a browser page
That’s usage of another ilk —
I’ve never said to another human being
“It’s refreshing to hear THAT” –
Let “that” be a blank you fill in with words like
“Such honesty,” or “such original thought”
Or “recognizable English spoken in Scotland” –
Not one person ever said anything like that to me
Not about what I’ve said, or thought, or done –
Geez, I hope this doesn’t reflect poorly on my intellect ability–
The only time I hear someone use the term
Is in the movies, or a play, or on TV
A soft drink commercial maybe –
Although I wonder what that means as well–
Speech so affected that if I ever said it
I’d certainly never do so seriously
They’re acting, not speaking about
What they’ve experienced in real life
They’re characters parroting scripted lines
Possibly written by someone like me
Who’s never known
Exactly what that was supposed to mean
To be “refreshed” by anything
Said, or thought, or done, or drunk
A line that may mean nothing to the audience (me)
Because they (I) too have not a clue
About what the darn thing means
