All Is But Toys

Last Monday I did what I always do
Settled now into my retirement routine
I woke up, for which I’m thankful every day
Drank coffee while I sat petting my dog
Went walking, did yard work
Read something, wrote something, posted something
Watched the news, and some shows, practiced music.
But then I received a call
Although happening more often as well
A friend died
When we were kids
A favorite game was “top wars”
Replace the metal tips with nails
Unleash them with great force
Try to land on the other’s top
Inflict as much damage as possible
I don’t have that kind of strength anymore
Destroying each other’s toys
What a game to lead
To lifelong friendship
