For a Little While

Each would fill each
To brimming can as may
But the moment
Comes, soon lost fingers
That slide between
Index and thumb
A brief wax scent
Breathless down
Count by a cooling heart
Hold every second
But summing ahead’s easy
Eyes squinting tight
The sun held off
Draining by a shading hand
So easy to pretend to hear
No, to hear and pretend
Not to understand
Not want the words
To register
A beast in nature’s
Win, lose
Of burying worlds
Lost all on four winds
Dust away of all speech
Word’s remnant scatter
Far and wide, gone dry
And never to say againriter
Repeat in low speech
Whispered so deathly softly
In an emptied ear to starve
