Last Night

Scan the sky to grasp more stars tonight
Fit them in your pocket for a coming shower of light
Always wish for the tempting moon as well
But there’s no way
To slip that in
The size of a wedding cake plate
Bulging and braking through the fabric

Feel the consecrating warmth
Against your thigh
Touch them to reassure
They’re there in their collective power
Brilliant ammunition
Do battle against dreadful darkness
Where you come upon a raging stream to ford
Some mountain to climb with heroic strides
To shower them finally through the air
Celebrate a victory over longing
The singular fear of not belonging
Of no challenge again ever offering
Your light collection dying out
The powder wet before the fire
And every kindly obstacle erased
Too late
The night sky turning black
But for the one untouched moon
One fading desperate desire
Now every star that was
Has been plucked out
