The Wild Side

I dreamt I was returning to Africa,
traveling this time by ship.
As we came into port, I could see
all the trees were African Tulips,
erupting in full red-orange bloom.

Unable to dock on shore,
we had to walk across
a long ramp that reached out
to us, so far away from land
it seemed then as if
I was looking at
the city through
the wrong side
of a pair of binoculars.

So I walked and walked a long way,
swaying over still water
reflecting my face like a mirror,
many miles to the arrival terminal
which I realized was my hotel as well.

Exhausted, I went to my room
and found an elephant there,
which was perfect
since the purpose of this trip,
I suddenly understood,
was to go on safari.

My dream ended there.
I woke up in my house
full of elephants,
and all of them
needed feeding.
